Reputation

When a new car has been unveiled for the first time (and we're talking about a brand new model or a model with let's say a brand new engine or transmission) you don't know how that first version will end up working out.  First generation Mini Cooper's were plagued with clutch issues as well as radiator issues, but being a new car nobody knew about these issues.   If you were to buy a used one, you know what years had the issues and could opt for looking for a specific year and/or model that didn't have such flaws.
 

Insurance Premiums

With a used car, insurance rates tend to be lower.  With more parts being readily available in case of an accident, rates tend to go down and be more affordable than a new car.  Also remember that with a new car you most likely have to buy GAP insurance to avoid losing out on the devaluation gap in the vehicle vs what the insurance company believes your car is worth.
 

Options

Used cars typically don't give you many options for customization or special packages that may have been available when the car was new, but if a specific model was only made for a specific year, your best bet is to take the used car route.  You can browse around for a used car with less miles without much of a difference in price as long as you shop around for the best deal.
